Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service has become a treasured experience among alumnae and their families. For the past eight years, the day has been marked as a time to reflect and take action by serving with our community in a variety of ways.

This year, we are offering a variety of opportunities for alumnae and their family members to volunteer in a safe manner.

Nationalities Services Center (NSC)

NSC's Refugee and Community Integration (RCI) Department provides a wide range of services to meet the needs of newly arriving refugees, victims of human trafficking, and unaccompanied children. Currently there is a huge need for relocation services for Afghan refugees. Click here for more information about the Nationalities Services Center.

Donating: We are collecting items to be donated to the Nationalities Services Center for refugee housing set up. There are a number of ways to donate. Due to the impending weather on Monday, January 17, we are changing drop off logistics. There will be no drop off on Monday.  Please drop off all donations to Merion Mercy's front entrance of school anytime January 18- 21. There is a bin marked MLK Day of Service at the front door.  Please sign up for drop-off items using the SignUpGenius below. If drop-off is not an option, you can donate directly from an Amazon Wish List. (Please have the items shipped to the Barbara Harrison Gift Registry  address listed.) Click here to learn more about what and how to donate.

Home Set-Up Program: The Nationalities Services Center is working to secure a date and time for volunteers to help with the setup of a new home for an Afghan refugee family. Family members over the age of 16 are welcome to join us. If you are interested in taking part in this volunteer experience, please use the SignUpGenius below to register. We will contact you to see if the date and time works with your schedule once it is confirmed.

Kids Against Hunger Philabox

If you wish to be included in another volunteer opportunity, Kids Against Hunger Philabox is an organization that assists with food packaging that helps to stock the food banks directly in our Philadelphia area. Please learn more about Kids Against Hunger on their website. We will be spending Monday, January 31 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in their Broomall location. Use the SignUpGenius below to register. Please be sure to adjust the number attending if you are bringing any additional volunteers. Children 8 and older are welcome!
