Cultural Competency Training

Professional development for faculty, staff and students to improve school climate, address microaggressions in the classroom and community, and actively confront bias.

Faculty and staff attended 28 summer workshops on DEI-related topics. Examples include:

  • “Combating Unconscious Bias: Strategies for Developing Cultural Awareness,” Brandman University
  • “Doing the (Art) Work: Building an Anti-Racist Curriculum,” Columbia Museum of Art
  • “Neutrality Doesn't Work: How Schools Can Respond to BLM & Black@ Instagrams,” ISM
  • “Living Race Conversation Series on White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo,” Villanova University
  • “How to Practice Anti-racist School Counseling and College Advising,” NACAC
  • “African American History Since Emancipation,” Columbia University: Gilder Lehrman Institute
  • “Race and Rights in America,” Columbia University: Gilder Lehrman Institute
  • “Black Dignity: The Moral Vocabulary of Black Lives Matter,” University of Toronto Center for Ethics

Six students and six faculty attended the virtual NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference and the People of Color Conference from November 30-December 4, 2020.

Faculty and staff participated in training led by DEI consultant Trina Gary, CEO and Principal Consultant at Brown-Gary Associates, LLC in August and October. The August session was entitled "A.C.T. (Art Curating Truth) Paradigm™"; the October session was entitled, "Make Visible the Air We Breathe—Utilizing the A.C.T. Paradigm™."

The Board of Trustees began a year-long program of professional development focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, dedicating the mission reflections at meetings to Board Development. 

Common Hour hosted the program: “The 2020 Election: An Opportunity to Learn about Others and Ourselves, A Conversation with Dr. Dan Gottlieb” on October 19, 2020.
