MMA Weekly • November 8, 2019 Announcements Welcome to the MMA Weekly!
Merion Mercy is now publishing the "MMA Weekly" every Friday, which will cover important announcements, the school and athletics calendars, and other co-curricular updates. Since the calendar is subject to occasional adjustments, please be sure to check the live calendar throughout the week too.
Veteran's Day Salute
In honor of Veterans' Day, during the month of November, Merion Mercy Student Council has dedicated a bulletin board on the first floor of the school to members of our Merion community who have served our country. If you or a close family member or friend has fought or served and want to be honored on our bulletin board, please send the following to Student Council Communications Officer Kaitlyn Powel '21 at kpowel21@merion-mercy.com by Friday, November 15:
Thanksgiving Food Drive
Our drive begins on Wednesday, November 13 and concludes Friday, November 22.
This year we are providing Thanksgiving meals for 30 families.
Each homeroom is responsible for providing specified non-perishable foods.
Staffulty members are invited to make monetary contributions (payable to Merion Mercy Academy), which will purchase ShopRite gift cards. These cards will accompany the non-perishables so that the families may purchase their preferred perishable items for their Thanksgiving meal.
A group of MMA students will deliver the collected food items and gift cards on Monday, November 25.
Upcoming Retreats and Permission Form Due Dates
Kairos 71 will take place from Wednesday, November 20 through Friday, November 22 at Malvern Retreat House. Parents and caretakers of these seniors received information pertaining to the retreat via mail in mid-October. The retreat fee and permission forms are due into the Ministry Office on or before next Wednesday, November 13.
The Sophomore Class Retreat will take place on Tuesday, December 3. Sophomores received an email with the Parental/Caregiver Permission Form. This completed form is due on or before Wednesday, November 20.
Volunteer Clearances
All parents are reminded that in order to volunteer at MMA in a capacity that involves interacting with our students you must have on file the proper background checks and clearances. This includes parents who are driving club/team members to games/events, helping with clubs or activities (e.g., MMMT, Mock Trial, etc.) as well as chaperones for school-sponsored trips (our annual field trip days are: March 20 for juniors and seniors; April 24 for freshmen and sophomores). One of the requirements involves attending an in-person class. A complete list of these requirements can be found at: Parent Volunteer Clearances.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have previously submitted clearances and you plan on volunteering this year, please check with Anne Gregg (agregg@merion-mercy.com) in the Main Office to verify that you are in compliance. Two of the background checks must be renewed every five years. Also, in the past, a "Code of Conduct" was accepted in place of training that must now be attended in person. Common Hour
All are invited to join us for our first Common Hour of the school year: The Holocaust and the Christian World: A Call to Mercy Action on Monday, November 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Merion Mercy's Dining Commons. Inspired by the tradition of many smaller liberal arts colleges, the Common Hour is an opportunity for all members of the Merion Mercy community to engage in a collective discussion of a contemporary social issue through the lens of academic scholarship. For the 2019-20 school year, the focal point for the Common Hour will be on the intersection of the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy with the best practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
For our first event, we are delighted to have Dr. Carol Rittner, RSM, Distinguished Professor of Holocaust & Genocide Studies Emerita, Stockton University, speak on her recently published book, The Holocaust and the Christian World. Dr. Rittner will explore the world's descent into the madness of Hitler's Nazi Germany, specifically focusing on the uncomfortable reality of Christian inaction.
