Molding Masterpieces.

Merion Mercy Academy's Art Department creates a forum in which students expand their creativity through critical thinking and direct problem solving in both traditional and digital media. Through their studies, students learn artistic frameworks in design, composition, and color theory while adapting skills across drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and graphic design. Each project emphasizes curiosity, innovation, and resilience — vital skills in both artistic and real-world contexts.

Our spacious studios are set up to provide bright, northern light, dynamic work stations, and visual inspiration at every turn. More so, the visual arts curriculum, including our Honors Art Program, is structured to develop the artist within every student through hands-on guided practice and a variety of diverse styles and cultural traditions. All students are encouraged to use their creative talents in service of others in many service-learning projects.

Student Art Galleries

Throughout the school year, our galleries shine with rotating student exhibitions, filling the space with color, creativity, and fresh ideas. The excitement builds toward our Annual Festival of the Arts in May, a joyful celebration where the very best artwork from every art student is showcased throughout the school for students and families to explore.

The World is Our Canvas

Our art program takes students out into Philadelphia and surrounding areas to see how artists communicate ideas and tell stories through their work.

Field experiences include visits to private contemporary collections, current exhibits at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, local galleries, and artists’ studios with dynamic artist talks. These experiences broaden students’ perspectives, helping them connect what they create in the studio to the vibrant conversations happening in today’s art world.

Visual Arts Honor Program

The Honors Art Major Program is a sequential course of study designed to deepen students’ understanding of the role of art and design in today’s world. Students are challenged to think critically, solve problems creatively, and communicate ideas effectively through a range of traditional and digital media. Each project is designed to encourage problem solving skills, independent thinking, authentic self-expression, and the development of a distinctive artistic voice.

Coursework emphasizes hands-on practice in major art forms, graphic design, as well as digital design challenges that introduce students to the principles of communication in a modern context. Studio work is supported by group critiques, individual feedback, analysis of master artists, and guided reflection, all of which foster each artist's portfolio development and the ability to evaluate creative work thoughtfully.

This advanced-level curriculum equips students with the skills and experiences necessary for measurable progress in the visual arts, while also preparing them for college admission, scholarships and employment opportunities.
