Spanish Week Celebrates Culture with a Variety of Activities

Spanish Week at Merion Mercy Academy
  • Student Life

Students throughout the school—whether studying Spanish or not—were invited to participate in a variety of events in celebration of Spanish Week, October 7-11, 2024. Throughout the week, activities related to the Spanish language and associated cultures and communities of the Spanish-speaking world were planned in collaboration with the LatinX Affinity Group, Spanish Cub and student leaders. The week coincided with the final weeks of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15-October 15.

Each day's activities included morning prayers in Spanish and English and a lesson on LatinX activism and the Critical Concerns, highlighting female activists from the global LatinX community whose work focuses on those issues. Other events included:

  • Música en Español played in the hallways between classes
  • School-wide trivia
  • Desayunar con los profes during which students were invited to learn how to make simple, traditional breakfast items with the Spanish teachers who explained the cultural significance of each
  • A traditional dessert contest for Levels 3 & 4 Spanish students
  • Wearing t-shirts in Spanish

In this "Bear Share," students spoke of what they learned about Spanish culture:
