This past weekend, Merion Mercy's crew program made waves at Head of The Charles in Boston, MA.
As one of the most prestigious rowing events in the world, Head of the Charles is a three-day regatta and festival that features the top athletes and crew programs every year. In the 2024 competition, Merion Mercy was invited to bring an impressive four boats to compete, including an alumnae boat, in an exceptional showcase of talent and school spirit. The event was not just a competition but a celebration of the Merion Mercy community. Students, teachers, families, and alumnae traveled from near and far to cheer on the rowers, creating an electrifying atmosphere of support and camaraderie. Their cheers and encouragement echoed along the Charles River, lifting the spirits of every Merion rower.
In addition to the current boats, several MMA alumnae represented their colleges with pride. Among them was Grace O'Connor '24 (Yale '28), who delivered a standout performance as coxswain, setting a course record and winning her event. Her achievement highlighted the legacy of excellence that Merion Mercy instills in its students.
The weekend was also marked by a special invitation from the La Salle College High School crew team. The Merion Mercy rowers joined them for a mass at St. Peter's in Cambridge, followed by a team dinner. The dinner featured an inspiring keynote speech from Olympic gold medalist and Team USA flag bearer, Nick Mead. His words left a lasting impression on the young athletes, encouraging them to strive for greatness both on and off the water.
The crews may not have reached the medal podium, but they competed with grit and determination against the most elite high school rowing programs in the country. The Varsity 8 proudly secured a spot for next year’s event, ensuring Merion Mercy's continued presence at the Head of the Charles. More than just a race, this experience reflected the school’s commitment to excellence, the strength of community, and the spirit of growth that defines Merion Mercy.
The memories made, lessons learned, and bonds strengthened will undoubtedly carry forward, inspiring future generations of Merion Mercy rowers. An unforgettable weekend full of memories and MMA pride!
