Being Fulfilled at St. Francis Inn

For nearly ten years, groups of Merion Mercy students have spent a summer immersion week in community with volunteers at St. Francis Inn in Kensington. The summer of 2026 was no exception. This year, Micah Gugger ‘28, Lucy McGuire ‘28, Hana Nguyen ‘27, Evelyn O’Malley ‘28, and Grace Schmidt ‘28 spent the week giving to others while simultaneously being filled themselves. Whether prepping and serving the evening meal for the Inn’s 200 guests, to seeing basic needs fulfilled at Marie’s Closet, the students quietly and tirelessly completed the smallest tasks to the most significant. One of the most special aspects of the experience is conversation with the guests whose names they got to know, along with their stories. St. Francis Inn’s Father Michael shared the back story of several guests to help the students understand the circumstances that sometimes lead them to the streets. Social Studies teacher and chaperone Katherine Finnegan said, “The stories were heartbreaking and moving and really helped to bring to life the phrase, ‘There but for the grace of God go I.’” Father Michael also gave the girls a prescient warning about seeking connection and contentment in life versus consumption and achievement. 

Hana found talking with the visitors and hearing their stories to be the most impactful part of the experience. “It made me feel more connected to my local community.” She added, “I learned the importance of meeting people where they are and gained a deeper understanding of our school values: Compelled by Mercy and A Voice for Dignity and Respect.”

Lucy wrote, “This experience really opened my eyes to the joy of serving others.” 

Spanish teacher and chaperone Fernanda Martinez-Varela noted, “As a teacher, I feel deeply proud of the way our students gave themselves wholeheartedly to the mission, serving those in need with compassion and grace, and listening to others’ personal stories with empathy. They worked tirelessly day after day to bring hope and light to others in difficult times.”
