Students Pitch Ocean-Saving Ideas to “Shark Investors”

Prototypes from Miss Chard's student presentations

Students in Miss Arielle Chard’s three sections of Earth and Marine Science recently pitched their final projects to “shark investors” in the hopes of securing funding for their unique inventions. The assignment challenged students to research environmental issues affecting the ocean, develop innovative solutions, and pitch their ideas to classmates and investors in a “Shark Tank”-style presentation.

Students identified a specific environmental concern, explained the benefits of their product, described how it works, and estimated both costs and potential profits, all with the goal of convincing investors to support their idea. Each team also created a 3-D prototype to bring its concept to life.

Ideas ranged from technology designed to detect and remove pollutants from the ocean to sea-saving kits, propellers that eliminate bykill, a machine that helps repopulate coral reefs, an underwater greenhouse, solar powered ships that decrease sound pollution and even an eco-friendly cruise line.

Teams were evaluated on the strength of their invention, prototype, presentation and pitch, infographic flyer, creativity and effort, and professionalism.

Beyond showcasing their creativity and scientific knowledge, the project encouraged students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and approach real-world environmental challenges through an entrepreneurial lens. By combining innovation with purpose, students demonstrated that the next generation is already imagining smarter, more sustainable solutions for protecting our oceans.
