Ricordia: Black History Month at Merion Mercy

by Delaney Gillespie '27

February marked the 50th official anniversary of the first Black History Month celebration, dedicated to celebrating culture and commemorating the powerful history of the Black community. For centuries, Black women have been overlooked and discriminated against yet they still push to lead and build stronger future generations. At Merion Mercy Academy, Black History Month is a widely celebrated commemoration, honoring all those who fought for equality and admiring the brave voices of the Black community.

Throughout the month of February, the Student Diversity Leadership Team and the Black Student Union planned activities and performances for the school community. Activities this year included line dancing classes, an HBCU and Divine Nine event, banana pudding making at lunch codes, and a movie night and discussion of “The Hate U Give.” The month also included a prayer service honoring Black Catholic saints. The celebration culminates with the beloved Black Student Union Showcase, which consists of cultural dancing, speeches about acclaimed Black leaders, and even a fashion show representing women in Black history. As Nydia Kannah, Community Outreach Officer for the Student Diversity Leadership Team, explained, “Each event is designed to educate, celebrate, and strengthen our sense of community.” Similarly, our Student Council President, Colette Remy ‘26 said, "The celebration of Black History Month goes beyond a reminder of the struggles the Black community has faced; it's also a recognition of the success many Black individuals have achieved. From the past to the present, Black people continue to strive for excellence and honor the people who came before them." Both powerful young leaders, Nydia and Colette are dedicated to their work and lead, learn and serve everyday. In conclusion, Black History Month is a distinguished and respected tradition in the Merion Mercy Academy community.
