Merion Mercy Academy Science Teacher Lizzie Oakley holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, and her master's dissertation included research on human remains from Herculaneum. She also has experience in classical archaeology, biological archaeology, and anthropological genetics, which allows her to incorporate social and historical perspectives into her classroom curriculum. This fall, Dr. Oakley is taking her expertise beyond the Merion Mercy classroom to teach a seminar for Main Line School at Night on "Pompeii - A Dig Into the Archaeological Evidence."
Pompeii is well known for its archaeological evidence, which captures a terrifying moment in time that has fascinated humans for centuries. In this program, Dr. Oakley will investigate what archaeological evidence can tell us about life in the past, as well as how recent research has provided insight into the events of August, 79 CE. She will also discuss the ethical implications of continuing archaeological research, a process that is both illuminating and destructive.
Dr. Oakley's seminar will be presented on November 12, 2024 through the Main Line School at Night program.
