MMA Students Selected for Delaware County Youth Leadership Academy

At Merion Mercy Academy, we empower young women to lead, learn, and serve—and our students put these values into action every day. Recently, sophomores Avery Fosbenner and Lily Nelson were selected to participate in the 16th annual Delaware County Youth Leadership Academy, a program that brings together more than 30 outstanding high school students from throughout the county to explore key issues impacting our communities and our country’s future.

The goal of the Academy, organized by the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, is to prepare emerging leaders for the opportunities and responsibilities ahead. As Chamber President Trish McFarland shared, “Our future depends so much on the next generation of individuals who are willing to accept the challenge. You will one day be asked to make a difference, and we want to help you to be successful.”

Over three days, students engaged in interactive sessions and panel discussions, emphasizing open dialogue and real-world applications of leadership.

Avery, who was nominated by Merion Mercy college counselor Lauren Plaxa, valued the chance to connect with peers who are equally passionate about making a difference. She also appreciated the opportunity to learn from the county’s entrepreneurs and business leaders. “It was a meaningful experience that gave me insights into setting future goals, making thoughtful decisions about college, and becoming the kind of leader people trust and enjoy working with.”

Lily, nominated by Aimee-Kate Mooney, vice president and executive director of CCCShines, also embraced the opportunity to grow. “We met with panelists who shared their journeys and gave us advice on navigating the business world with purpose and respect. The program was an amazing experience where I built friendships, learned valuable leadership skills, and found new ways to support my community.”

One of the highlights for both students was their work on the “Imagine Delco” initiative, a culminating project through which participants offered the Chamber of Commerce fresh insight into the priorities and concerns of local teens—and their vision for a stronger Delaware County.

We are proud of Avery and Lily for representing Merion Mercy Academy with distinction and for stepping boldly into their leadership journeys!
