Merion Mercy rowers kicked off May with standout performances at the City Championships on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Competing against 74 teams, Merion’s first varsity boat (1V) earned bronze in the Girls Varsity 8+; the second varsity boat (2V) captured gold in the Girls 2nd Varsity 8+; and the freshman boat earned silver in the Freshman 8+.

While Merion rowing has previously earned gold in other categories at the City Championships, this marks the program’s first-ever gold medal in the 2V 8+ event.

“Winning a City Championship is a major accomplishment and speaks to the team’s depth, talent, and competitiveness against some of the strongest rowing programs in the area,” said assistant coach and college counselor Allison Hoffmann.

Merion now looks ahead to the Mid-Atlantic Youth Championships (May 9–10) and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta (May 15–16). The 99th annual Stotesbury Cup—recognized as the world’s largest high school regatta—will bring together more than 5,000 athletes from over 180 schools.

These results mark an encouraging step forward as the team continues to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
