On September 23, 2024, Samantha Ross '25 and Giovanna Girardi '27 represented Merion Mercy Academy at The Global Impact Forum (TGIF) and High School Student Spotlight, presenting their Governor's STEM competition submission, The Serenity Station. Hosted by Penn State University at the Philadelphia Convention Center, the event featured 20 innovative projects from across the state designed to build and improve our community. The convention itself included 140 speakers including the Secretary of Education Khalid Mumin, CEO's, entrepreneurs, and modern leaders in tech with keynote Hadi Partovi, the CEO of code.org.
TGIF Director Amanda J. Smith said, "We are honored to have all of these amazing students here today. You are our next leaders, you are our next change makers. Today your job is to connect, learn and grow. Ask yourself, how can today help you become that changemaker?"
Partovi added, "Technology is part of every aspect of society; it is important that our schools teach computer science. Creativity is the most important engine in our community. I hope more schools teach creativity instead of memorization.
After reviewing Sam and Giovanna's presentation, the Chief Education Officer for the city of Philadelphia, Deborah Carrera, described it as "Incredible!" Ryan Oliver, Director of build.org, added, "I'd like you to add biometrics; let's stay in contact." Others gave the students advice for how to move their project forward, including pursuing funding.
Reflecting on the experience, Sam described it as "amazing." She admits that going in she had no idea what to expect, but that the outcome was incredible. "We met like minded students with so much passion and drive for their academic curiosities while also being able to network with professionals and develop our project. I look forward to seeing where this idea takes us, especially after different offers for mentorship and other resources."
Giovanna was similarly delighted by the opportunity. She adds, "We got to talk to and meet so many intelligent people. It was exciting to have people actively asking questions about our project, and supporting us in the idea of furthering our research. I can’t wait to see what we do next with it!"
