Image Explosion Earns National Recognition for Excellence

Merion Mercy Academy’s annual magazine, Image Explosion, has been recognized with a Superior ranking by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). This distinction comes as part of the NCTE’s REALM—Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines—program, which celebrates outstanding student publications.

In the 2024 contest, 422 student magazines from middle schools, high schools, and colleges across 46 states and five countries were considered for recognition. This marks the first time Merion Mercy Academy has submitted Image Explosion for this award.

“We’re incredibly proud of our students’ creativity, collaboration, and artistic achievement,” said English teacher Caitlin Mattera, who co-advises Image Explosion alongside Theology teacher Marianne Rule. “This recognition is a testament to their dedication and talent.”

The 2024 edition of Image Explosion, themed "Moment," showcased a diverse collection of student work. The fine arts included photography, acrylics, watercolor, charcoal, and graphite, while the literary work included poetry and prose. Since its inception in 1996, Image Explosion has provided students of all grade levels with a platform to express their artistic and literary voices.

The REALM awards are determined by members of the National Council of Teachers of English, who evaluate submissions based on art, writing, and design. The Superior ranking is the second-highest honor awarded. In past years, Image Explosion has been recognized by the Pennsylvania School Press Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

This well-deserved recognition highlights Merion Mercy Academy’s commitment to fostering creativity and excellence in the arts.
