Celebrating Hispanic Heritage with La Semana del Español

Under the leadership of Merion Mercy Academy’s Latinx Affinity Group, the school marked the final days of Hispanic Heritage Month with La Semana del Español—Spanish Language Week—held October 13–17.

The celebration began in spectacular fashion with a Hispanic Heritage Showcase during Community Reset. The event opened with a parade of flags representing Spanish-speaking countries and Puerto Rico, followed by powerful student reflections and performances. Members of the Latinx Affinity Group highlighted influential Hispanic women and their lasting impact, explored current issues facing the Latino community, and shared elements of culture—from faith and food to music and tradition. The showcase concluded with an energetic and crowd-pleasing dance performance.

Throughout the week, the celebration continued with bilingual morning prayers, Spanish-language music between classes, daily features on the Good Morning Merion broadcast, and a school-wide trivia competition testing cultural knowledge. After school, community members were invited to learn to dance the merengue and enjoyed a watch party of Disney Pixar’s Coco, hosted by the Student Diversity Leadership Team. The festivities also included the popular dessert contest for Spanish students, whose sweet creations were judged by faculty and staff.

Opportunities like La Semana del Español and affinity group showcases reflect Merion Mercy Academy’s commitment to celebrating the diversity of our community and living out our call to be voices for dignity and respect.
