On Thursday, September 5, Merion Mercy Academy brought together its Big and Little Sisters for an opportunity "steeped in service." An MMA tradition for decades, Bigs and Littles makes connections between seniors and sophomores, juniors and freshmen, and in the process strengthens the remarkable bonds of sisterhood. This year, the focus of the occasion was on giving to others.
The time together began with a collection of t-shirts for Christ the King Parish in Haddonfield, which will repurpose them into grocery bags for the Sisters of Saint Joseph Neighborhood Center in Camden. From there, the classes were divided into groups for their specific service projects. Seniors and sophomores designed handmade, personalized cards to wish a happy Mercy Day to the Sisters of Mercy who live in the Motherhouse and McAuley Convent. Mrs. Suzanne Walker, who leads the Mercy Mission Corps, encouraged the girls to "continue Catherine McAuley's tradition of letter writing" and to consider joining Kate's Girls, which delights the Sisters with personal visits.
For their part, juniors and freshmen prepared special lunch bags, complete with messages of affirmation, for Face to Face in Germantown, one of Merion Mercy's community partners.
The occasion was a wonderful reminder that Merion Mercy girls are called "to lead, learn, and serve."
