A Love of Literature on Display

Merion Mercy students and faculty share a deep love of literature—and during the week of April 20, that passion was on full display as the school celebrated Literary Week with creativity and humor.

The festivities began on Monday with “Mimic Monday,” when students came dressed as their favorite English teachers, while faculty joined in by impersonating one another. The playful day set the tone for a week filled with imagination and fun.

On Tuesday, faculty from departments across the school transformed into beloved literary characters and famous authors. Hallways were filled with familiar faces from the page, from the Cat in the Hat and Matilda to Hester Prynne and Edgar Allan Poe.

Wednesday highlighted the power of the spoken word with an English Spoken Word Showcase. Students shared favorite poems—many discovered in AP Literature classes—as well as original pieces of their own writing. Nicolette Whitehawk performed her Shakespeare selection from the February Shakespeare competition, while Sanaa Roberts delivered the speech she prepared for the English-Speaking Union U.S. National Finals Public Speaking Competition held on Friday, April 24, 2026.

The showcase also included the much-anticipated reveal of this year’s Image Explosion theme: “Transcience.” Co-moderator Mrs. Katie Cho announced that students submitted an impressive 224 pieces of art and writing for the literary magazine, with 157 works selected for publication.

On Thursday, students embraced the “Poem in Your Pocket.” When stopped by an English teacher, participants were challenged to recite it in exchange for a well-earned candy prize.

The week wrapped up on Friday with literary trivia and bookmark making, bringing the celebration to a fitting close.

Literary Week was a joyful reminder that reading, writing, and storytelling remain at the heart of the Merion Mercy experience—fostering creativity, confidence, and connection across the entire school community.
