Fall 2008 Highlights:
Head of the Charles:
MMA's Varsity 8 finished 14th out of 68 entries in the Women's Youth Eight category. Competing against high school as well as all-star club programs from across the United States and Canada, MMA completed the grueling 3 mile race in 18:14 seconds and given their outstanding performance (within 5% of 1st place) have secured a guaranteed entry into next years regatta. The student-athletes included: Mary Houston (bow), Olivia Nowinski (2), Kerry Bennett (3), Trieste Baccile (4), Amanda Lorei (5), Moira Schanne (6), Kirsten Riley (7), Maureen White (Stroke), Jen Guzzardi (cox) and Katie Messina, Liz Wurfel and Sarah LaBarth (subs).
Other Regatta's:
- Kings Head Regatta: the varsity 8 and varsity lightweight 8 placed second and third respectively and the JV 8 took second.
- Navy Day Regatta: MMA’s first varsity sped the three mile course in 15:33 to place second out of 21 entries (one of only two high school crews to break the 16 minute mark).
- Head of the
Schuylkill : JV 8 (lightweights) battled a fierce headwind to finish 8th out of 21 schools and the first varsity 8 was 3rd out of 41 participants. - Braxton Regatta: V-4 (Amanda Lorei, Kerry Bennett, Kirsten Riley, Maureen White and Jen Guzzardi) captures gold. Novice -8 handily won their heat and posted the best novice time of the day and JV-8 finished in second.
"Learn to Row":
This was the best fall yet! With twelve participants, including ten freshmen, learning the stroke mechanics, conditioning exercises and how not to capsize their shell, this year’s group excelled beyond expectations and rowed without the assistance of experienced upperclassmen.
